Since pickleball is the fastest-growing sport in the US, the wait for public courts is getting longer and longer. Many pickleball fans now wonder: How much would it cost to put a pickleball court in my backyard?
The short answer is $20 – $30/sq. ft. That is for a pickleball court using SnapSports tile or acrylic surfacing. Grand Slam Courts offers both alternatives.
Many beginners learn to play pickleball on public courts, which usually use an acrylic surface. But, there are advantages to the SnapSports tile. For example:
- SnapSports tile is maintenance-free and backed by a 16-year manufacturer’s warranty. Acrylic surfacing is warranted for 1 year and requires more maintenance.
- The life expectancy of SnapSports tile is 20+ years, while acrylic courts need to be resurfaced about every 3-5 years, depending upon usage, location, maintenance.
- SnapSports tile can be expected to remain colorful and virtually like new beyond the warranty period. Acrylic surfacing may fade or stain within 3-6 months of installation.
The $20-$30/sq. ft. cost range is based on several factors:
- Existing elevations. Substantial slopes on the property require more leveling and result in greater cost.
- Soil conditions can also affect cost. Within our service area, which encompasses the San Antonio metro area and surrounding counties (including the Texas Hill Country), every ground condition known to man can be found. There are areas with clay, sand, black dirt, topsoil, and limestone rock. Each location presents its own challenges.
- The surfacing chosen. Acrylic is slightly less expensive initially, but because of the need for frequent resurfacing, it will cost more than SnapSports tile over the life of the court.
How big is a standard pickleball court? Do you have space for one in your backyard? Grand Slam Courts clients typically choose either a 30’ x 60’ court or a tournament-size 34’ x 64’ court. The larger court provides a wider perimeter for those playing at a more competitive level. So, these pickleball courts total either 1800 sq. ft. or 2176 sq. ft. respectively.
About 75% of our clients choose to double, triple, or quadruple the fun by creating a court for multi-sport play. For the cost of a basketball goal, a pickleball court can be turned into a “modified half court” basketball court for 3-on-3 play—with a full three-point line. With a “net adjustment system,” and you can have a:
- regulation badminton court
- and a modified volleyball play area with a regulation-height net.
Other court options include perimeter fencing and LED lights. While these options increase the cost, they can greatly increase your enjoyment of the court.
Grand Slam Courts builds custom pickleball courts. Our courts are designed and constructed for the specific location and to maximize the client’s enjoyment of their investment in a court.
