How Many Pickleball Courts Fit on a Tennis Court?

Multi-sport game courts have always been popular for use in backyards. Currently, the most popular combination among families is a court with basketball and pickleball. For commercial customers, tennis with pickleball is a frequent request.

A standard 60’ x 120’ tennis court can accommodate four pickleball courts. Hotels and resorts, apartment complexes, schools and community parks can expand their recreational offerings by providing nets and striping for both racquet sports.

Most experts suggest that if you are going to use a tennis court for more than one pickleball court, the pickleball courts need to be set up with 7 feet between the courts to allow a large enough perimeter for safety.

Beyond the court size, tennis courts and pickleball courts use nets that are different. Tennis court nets are, of course, wider and higher. Because pickleball balls are less “bouncy,” the nets are lower. Tennis court nets are 42” high at the posts and 36” high at the center of the court. Pickleball nets are 36” high at the posts and 34” at the center. Grand Slam Courts can provide adjustable net systems that will accommodate both sports.

For public parks and community recreational areas, four pickleball courts can obviously provide recreation to a greater number of players than a single tennis court. So converting a tennis court to pickleball is tempting. On the other hand, tennis players may feel cheated when they arrive courtside and find that play is impossible–if even just one of the pickleball courts is in use. For communities or organizations that have many avid tennis players, a separate pickleball court or courts may be preferable.
