One of the most common questions that we are asked is about the space needed for a basketball court. Interestingly, there is more than one answer to that question.
Basketball is a very popular sport in San Antonio, and its popularity is in part due to the success of its only professional sports franchise. The Spurs brought professional sports to the city in 1973, and fans have followed that team through five NBA Championships and six Conference titles. Many San Antonio families want to get in on the basketball action in their own backyards. For schools, churches, rec centers, and other organizations in the San Antonio area, an indoor court is important.
Grand Slam Courts installs both indoor and outdoor basketball courts. SnapSports manufactures top-quality modular tile and wood-look flooring for both indoor and outdoor use.
So, how much space does a basketball court require?
A small “shooter court” can be as small as 25’ x 30’. If you want a court with a full 3-point line, you will need a court close to a standard 50’ x 47’ half-court with a minimum size of 44’ x 45’. There are many options that fall between those two.
Strangely enough, a “full-size court” comes in multiple sizes, as well. Each level of play has its own standards for the size of a full-size court.
For a basketball court that meets the standards for high school basketball, courts are 84’ x 50’. The free-throw line is 15 feet from the goal.
For college-level basketball, the court is 50’ x 94’. The free throw line is 22.15 feet from the goal. The NBA and WNBA use the same size court as US colleges that are part of the NCAA.
However basketball courts used in international competition, like the Olympics, use FIBA court dimensions. A regulation-size FIBA court is 27 meters (almost 92 feet) by 15 meters (just over 49 feet).
