Outdoor Play Results in Outstanding Fitness

Many people associate health and fitness with a gym membership. A fitness club or gym is a great way to get consistent exercise. But, it’s not for everyone. In fact, there are some very good reasons to spend more time exercising outdoors—on your Sport Court from Grand Slam Courts. Or on your bike or wearing your running shoes. For example:

Being Outside Is a Special Pleasure for the Senses

For those who are cooped up inside office buildings or schools during the week, being outdoors can be a special treat. Enjoy the warmth of the sun on your skin. Listen to the birds chirping in the trees. Allow yourself to stop and appreciate trees, flowers, grass, and wildlife.

Get Yourself Some Natural Vitamin D

Called the “sunshine vitamin,” vitamin D promotes calcium absorption and maintaining healthy bones. Your body produces vitamin D when it is exposed to the sun’s rays. Vitamin D is especially important for women, who are at greater risk for osteoporosis.

Exercising Outdoors is a Mood Boost

According to one study of 800 participants, those who exercised outdoors reported increased energy and a greater sense of well-being, while also experiencing decreased anger and frustration. Those who exercised outdoors were also more likely to continue to exercise, compared with those who exercised only indoors.

Exercising outdoors does expose you to some additional inconveniences, though. Make sure you wear sunscreen, for example. Use 2-3 tablespoons over your exposed body and reapply every two hours—especially if you are really working up a sweat. Wear a hat and sunglasses to protect your head, face and eyes.

Dehydration is also a risk when you exercise outdoors in the heat. Make sure you have a water bottle with you, and check the humidity level (or better yet, the Heat Stress Index) before you leave the house. High humidity prevents sweat from evaporating and cooling the body. When the Heat Stress Index is expected to top 95 degrees during the day, schedule your workout during the early morning or in the evening when the air is cooler.

Get the whole family, friends and neighbors out on your backyard Sport Court, and enjoy the special benefits of exercising in the outdoors. There is no substitute for fun in the sun!
