Pickleball is one of the nation’s fastest growing sports. Those who play the sport say that it is fun, fast, and easy for all ages to pick up and play well.

Pickleball is played on a court that is like a tennis court, but smaller. A pickleball court is 20 feet wide by 44 feet long. That makes the dimensions of the marked court about 44% of the size of a standard tennis court. Because a pickleball is not as lively as a tennis ball, however, the surface area needed to play pickleball court is closer to 25% of what a tennis court requires.

Pickleball is played with a paddle that is larger than a ping pong paddle and made with a graphite frame and a hitting surface that contains a composite material, often a polymer. The balls look like whiffle balls and are less than 3 inches in diameter. The net has somewhat tighter webbing than a tennis court net and stands 34 inches high at the center of the court.

One fan of the sport described the game this way: Imagine playing ping pong while standing on the table!

There are several places to play pickleball in the San Antonio area. Find some courts here. Try it out. And when you get hooked, give Grand Slam Courts a call about building a pickleball court in your backyard.
